Basket Quilt UFO - WIP from Grandma's Red Needle

It took me some days deciding on how to do the basket blocks, since I was not that eager to do the original block design. Then I saw Melva's beautiful Basket block and knew right away my blocks need a 'flower pot'!

I think the left one looks much better and I decided on that design.
I also get to use up my basket weave fabrics that have been sitting on the shelf for some years! What I don't use for the blocks, will be used for a pieced backing. I made 5 of the design to the ...

Some Bunny Loves You from Made By Marney

I am pleased to offer these brand new adorable bunny patterns in time for our Easter season. What’s cuter than a bunny… so cute that I couldn’t stop designing them! Here are my 12 favorites. Choose just one or two for your Easter or Spring project, or get all 12 included in the BUNNY QUILT pattern displayed at the end of this post.

BUNNY WITH BOW is one of my favorites. Using striped fabric, like in this bow tie, can be challenging in paper piecing. Because you are flipping the fabric in place after you sew, the stripes ...

True Blue - Progress from Grandma's Red Needle

I worked on True Blue in January, when the chosen RSC color was blue
Unit #1 and #2 were done, and part of unit #3

The last days I'm working on True Blue again

The last 4 blocks of unit #3 are done

...and I'm almost done with the corner units.
I have to make 160 triangles! I'm almost there! 24 to go!

I'm making it scrappy; one triangle at a time. I have so many 1.5" strips to use. I was struggling with the first corner units; the pressing direction (on the pattern). I ...

Valentine Patterns for Your Loved Ones from Made By Marney

If you are new to paper piecing, I would love to share some tips for a beginner, or as a refresher. This past year I did a series of patterns and helpful videos for the American Quilter magazine. I can’t offer the pattern to you at this time because of publication rules, but I would love to share this short video on paper piecing tips. The video was linked to the January/February issue. Every issue in 2025 has a link to a video with my paper piecing tips.

This video explains the “butterfly ...

Easy Heart Quilt Block Pattern with a Racing Twist from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Most of my quilts come together with a lot of time and planning, even before I get the fabric. However, over the years of being part of a quilting bee collaborative, I have learned to let go and embrace the unknown. For this quilt, I sent the group (do.good.stitches – Harmony) an easy heart quilt block pattern, and the blocks decided to take on their own life.

The easy heart quilt block pattern is hanging in the back porch of a home.

Beginner-Friendly • Scrap Busting • Charity Inspired

Last weekend, I was a vendor at the Quilt, Craft, and Sewing Festival. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it felt like the perfect opportunity ...

Last Catch Up on RSC Monthly blocks 2025 / Potholders to a Friend from Grandma's Red Needle

As the title says; these are the last RSC blocks for 2025

'Coffee with Dad'
I love these blocks! They are so fun and fast to make

7 brown blocks
As you can see, two of them have more red than brown.

8 black blocks
Corrected to 7 blocks
Hm... How did that happen? Do you see it? Cup #3 first row and #1 second row are the same! I made one only! Messed up when I took the photos.

I'm a bit lost when it comes to it. How do I explain that? I have an idea ...

Back to Over the River and Through the Woods from Grandma's Red Needle

Now that the sewing table is cleared for RSC blocks, fabrics and other stuff, I'm ready to work on one of my oldest UFO; Over the River & Through the Woods.

If you read this post, all the stitcheries are done. I decided to use all fabrics to make it scrappier. The fabrics where cut and set aside until I could sew again.

After dust cleaning and mopping floors, the weekend was spent making the star blocks that goes between the stitcheries. Each block measures 6" finished and there are six blocks in each row. They are small, but easy ...

Catching Up on RSC July / August / September continues from Grandma's Red Needle

It has been a lot of catch up on RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) over the last couple of weeks. I have made a lot of blocks and I'm happy to say I'm all caught up (almost*!) on RSC 2025! Sewing table is cleared for squares and fabrics (for RSC), ready for something new (coming soon).
*There will be two more blocks from Sherry McConnell's BOM, that's it for this year.
For not to make it too photo-heavy, I'll make it into two posts.

What took the most time, was four blocks for Pat Sloan's ...

Catch-Up on RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) July / August / September 2025 from Grandma's Red Needle

 Hello everyone! I'm back!
I can't believe I haven't done a blog post since beginning of august! If you read that post, you know my 'Dear Nina' (Bernina 440 QE) was sick and had to go to a spa in South Africa. She has reached the spa and waiting for either good or bad news about what can be done.
Good news is, I purchased a new Bernina; 770 QE PLUS! Her name is 'Helena'. I got her in August and I very happy! It has a lot of features I most probably never will use. I ...

How come it's June already?! Before we know it's Fall and Christmas again!
Been busy quilting, I know I have missed a lot in blog-land. Hope you all are doing well and enjoying summer, or 'winter' on the Southern hemisphere.

Over the last days, I'm caught up on RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) for May, which was Green. Orange is chosen for June and all blocks done! I have mentioned earlier I prefer to do the RSC blocks beginning of the month. By doing it that way, I can work on anything I fancy the rest of the ...

Free Quilt Block – Treat Yourself & Your Scraps from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

From a Pile of Whites to Whimsical Fish

Lately, I’ve noticed an abundance of white fabric scraps piling up in my stash—more than any other color! While sorting through some focus fabrics from my Quilt Guild for charity blocks, inspiration struck. The playful cat print is the perfect contrast to a sardine-themed quilt block I’ve been wanting to make. Last weekend offered an ideal break between projects, so I took the opportunity for a little creative refresh—a “quilty jolt,” if you will. That spark led to the creation of a free quilt block pattern that’s ...

How to Sew a Fabric Storage Bin – Free Pattern from Patchwork Posse

Sewing your own fabric bin is easy when you use orphan quilt blocks! Learn how to sew them together with a lining.

Sewing your own little fabric bin is a great way to use your quilt blocks. Keeping the quilt blocks the same size is the key to making this tutorial work. Mix and match the blocks, or coordinate them depending on where you will be using the fabric bin.

The lining can be quilted to the batting or use fusible fleece to give it some stiffness and shape. These buckets are great for storing scraps, supplies, notions, or whatever ...

RSC Week #18 - GREEN for May from Grandma's Red Needle

Happy May!

It's the first Saturday in May and new RSC color (Rainbow Scrap Challenge)
Angela at SuperScrappy has chosen GREEN as the color for May.

I spent last weekend catching up on red by making

one half circle

and one quarter circle for 'Eclipse'. Here I have used red and green.
The pattern (layout) is still a bit confusing, but I should not bother or overthink about that at this point! I'll make the blocks and 'worry' about the layout when the time comes! lol

I had sew much fun making two green blocks for Pat Sloan ...

RSC Week 11 - More Yellow from Grandma's Red Needle

Where did the week go? It's already middle March, which means we are heading towards cooler days! Hot and sticky today.

Beginning of the week was wet and thundery. We got almost 4" rain. Not much, but every little drop counts. Mauritius is in drought (it's the rainy season and almost no rain!?) Water restrictions are put in force. Water reservoirs are about 40% or less.
Enough of weather, whatever it is, we can't do anything about it!

Over to sewing!

The RSC color for March is yellow
I made most of the blocks at the beginning ...
